Position Overview
The Commerce Architect will be responsible for designing, governing, and continuously enhancing the technology architecture that supports digital commerce, retail, B2B, and omnichannel capabilities. This includes ensuring that eCommerce, retail, customer engagement, payments, loyalty, marketing technology, ERP, data, security, infrastructure, and integration platforms operate together as a scalable, secure, and cost-effective technology ecosystem.
This is a hands-on, accountable role focused on developing practical solution designs, validating technical approaches, and ensuring implementation decisions align with business requirements, priorities, enterprise standards, security guidelines, integration principles, and measurable business outcomes.
The Commerce Architect will collaborate closely with delivery teams, business stakeholders, and external implementation partners to provide technical direction, guide architecture decisions, and help address trade-offs, risks, and exceptions without having direct people-management responsibilities.
The role involves translating business requirements into sustainable technology solutions that enhance operational efficiency, accelerate time to market, improve long-term maintainability, and deliver a better customer experience across digital, retail, B2B, and B2C channels.
Core
Develop and govern the target-state commerce architecture, technology roadmap, architectural standards, reusable design patterns, and plans for retiring legacy systems.
Convert business requirements into end-to-end technical designs covering applications, integrations, data, identity, security, resiliency, and operational requirements.
Act as the technical design authority by reviewing and approving solution designs, resolving cross-platform conflicts, managing architectural exceptions, and escalating significant risks.
Define and establish requirements for system performance, scalability, availability, security, accessibility, disaster recovery, and readiness for peak transaction volumes.
Ensure alignment between commerce and enterprise platforms by establishing system ownership, integration patterns, and reliable data flows.
Design solutions that support product information, pricing, inventory, orders, payments, loyalty, fulfillment, returns, and customer service across multiple channels.
Oversee data migration architecture, reconciliation processes, data quality, and ownership across commerce domains.
Establish technical acceptance criteria and provide guidance for integration, performance, security, resiliency, and operational-readiness testing.
Guide standards for environments, configuration management, deployments, releases, and continuous delivery.
Assess technology platforms and implementation partners based on business fit, security, extensibility, supportability, integration capabilities, and total cost of ownership.
Ensure internal teams and external partners adhere to approved architecture designs, documentation requirements, quality standards, and long-term supportability expectations.
Support cutover planning, go-live readiness, post-launch stabilization, defect triage, knowledge transfer, and transition to operational support teams.
Ensure production environments have appropriate monitoring, alerting, logging, service ownership, and support procedures in place.
Evaluate architecture effectiveness using measurable outcomes, including performance, reliability, customer experience, speed to market, operational efficiency, and cost.
Required
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
At least 5 years of experience in enterprise applications, digital commerce, solution architecture, or related technology roles, including enterprise-scale eCommerce solution design and implementation.
Strong knowledge of modern commerce architecture principles, including composable architecture, API-first design, cloud/SaaS platforms, identity management, integration patterns, event-driven architecture, and enterprise data flows.
Experience integrating commerce platforms with ERP, CRM, POS, payments, loyalty, marketing, customer service, analytics, and other enterprise systems.
Proven ability to translate business requirements into practical, secure, resilient, scalable, and maintainable technical solutions.
Experience collaborating with implementation partners, SaaS vendors, and cross-functional business and technology teams in complex enterprise environments.
Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly to both technical teams and business stakeholders.
Experience with commerce platforms such as BigCommerce or comparable modern enterprise eCommerce solutions.
Experience with ERP, CRM/CDP, integration platforms, payments, loyalty, marketing technology, fraud prevention, analytics, POS, subscriptions, and product/catalog management capabilities.
Experience designing or integrating omnichannel retail, B2B/B2C commerce, and enterprise transformation programs.
