Senior Accountant
Raleigh Area, NC
A growing software company seeks a hands-on Senior Accountant to own accounting operations, payroll, sales tax compliance, and financial reporting across multiple business entities.
This role is ideal for an experienced accountant who enjoys owning the details, solving problems independently, and building deep expertise rather than pursuing a management title. The position offers broad responsibility across accounting, payroll, compliance, and systems, with direct partnership with the CFO in a lean, collaborative environment.
Successful candidates will be comfortable operating independently, taking full ownership of recurring responsibilities, and helping improve processes as the business continues to evolve.

Key
Sales Tax & Compliance
Own the monthly multi-state sales tax compliance process
Review sales tax filings prepared through automated tax software platforms
Reconcile sales tax activity to the general ledger
Maintain sales tax registrations, nexus documentation, filing calendars, and compliance records
Investigate and resolve sales tax notices, assessments, and compliance issues directly with taxing authorities
Assist with sales tax cleanup projects and ongoing compliance initiatives
Prepare annual 1099 filings and related compliance reporting
Payroll & Employee
Process payroll and payroll-related accounting activities
Reconcile payroll and payroll tax accounts
Maintain payroll reporting schedules and compliance deadlines
Assist with administration of retirement and employee benefit programs
Ensure payroll filings and related obligations are completed accurately and on time
Accounting & Financial Reporting
Prepare journal entries and month-end accounting adjustments
Reconcile bank, credit card, payment processor, and balance sheet accounts
Prepare monthly financial statements and supporting schedules
Record and reconcile intercompany transactions
Maintain accurate general ledger activity across multiple entities
Prepare year-end workpapers and support external tax and accounting advisors
Systems & Process Improvement
Support accounting system migration and data validation efforts
Assist with accounting process documentation and procedure development
Identify opportunities to improve accuracy, efficiency, and internal controls
Participate in finance-related systems and reporting projects
Immediate Priorities
Assume ownership of account reconciliations currently handled by leadership
Take over payroll processing and related account reconciliations
Manage the review of monthly sales tax filings and compliance activities
Support resolution of historical multi-state sales tax issues
Help complete a migration from a legacy accounting platform to a modern cloud-based accounting system
Document recurring accounting procedures and establish repeatable workflows
Required
Bachelor's degree in Accounting
Strong understanding of GAAP and accrual accounting
Experience reviewing sales tax returns prepared through Avalara or a comparable platform
Experience resolving sales tax notices and compliance matters directly with taxing authorities
Advanced Excel skills including lookups, pivot tables, and reconciliation analysis
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
Public accounting background
CPA or CPA-track

Sales tax filings are accurate, timely, and fully reconciled
State tax notices are resolved promptly and independently
Payroll and payroll tax obligations are processed accurately
Monthly account reconciliations are completed on schedule
Financial statements are accurate and require minimal review adjustments
Accounting processes are documented and consistently followed
Critical accounting responsibilities transition successfully from leadership to this role
