Position Summary

We are seeking a detail-oriented Staff Accountant to join the accounting and finance team of an established nonprofit organization in downtown Washington, DC. This individual will support general ledger accounting, financial reporting, month-end close, and tax-related activities.

The ideal candidate will have prior nonprofit accounting experience, familiarity with Form 990 reporting, strong Microsoft Excel skills, and experience working with large ERP systems.

Responsibilities

Prepare and post journal entries and maintain accurate general ledger records.

Perform monthly account reconciliations and assist with month-end and year-end close.

Support the preparation of monthly financial statements and financial reports.

Assist with Form 990 preparation, including gathering supporting schedules and financial documentation.

Ensure accounting activities comply with GAAP and applicable nonprofit accounting standards.

Review and reconcile financial data across various accounts and departments.

Work closely with Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and other internal teams.

Support annual audit activities and respond to auditor requests.

Utilize ERP systems and Excel to analyze financial data, prepare reports, and improve accounting processes.

Assist with additional accounting projects and reporting requirements as needed.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred.

2+ years of accounting experience, preferably within a nonprofit organization.

Experience with Form 990 preparation or supporting the Form 990 filing process required.

Hands-on experience with a large ERP/accounting system required.

Strong Microsoft Excel skills, including pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, and financial data analysis.
