Tax Director – NJ Office Lead

Our client is a modern, tech-forward accounting platform that acquires established CPA practices and operates them with the capital, technology, and support that independent firms rarely have access to. They’re seeking a Tax Director to lead their New Jersey business unit, starting with an established office in the Andover area with additional offices joining the portfolio in the coming years. This isn’t a narrow technical role — it’s a leadership position for someone who’s comfortable owning a book of business, managing a team, and partnering on the operational work of building something better. Total compensation up to $270k.

Key Responsibilities:

Lead the NJ business unit as principal in charge, owning client relationships, quality, and day-to-day operations

Stay hands-on with the existing book of business — review, sign off, and serve as the senior technical resource clients rely on

Manage and develop the local team in a collaborative, coaching-oriented environment

Partner with firm leadership on transforming processes and systems across offices as the platform scales

Prepare and review returns across a broad mix of entity types; this is a generalist role, not a narrow specialty

What We’re Looking For

Two profiles tend to fit this role well.

The first is someone ambitious and quick to learn who has already owned a book of business, even a smaller one, and is ready to take on a larger stage.

The second is someone who has done this job before, stepped away for any reason, and is now ready to get back in. In either case, small-firm experience matters here.

This firm needs someone who can handle the full picture, not just one slice of it.

CPA preferred; experienced EAs will be considered

Several years of public accounting experience in a small or mid-size firm environment

Broad technical proficiency across individual, business, partnership, and other return types

Demonstrated ability to own and retain client relationships

Experience leading or mentoring a team, or clear readiness to step into that role

Tech-forward mindset with genuine interest in how AI and modern tooling are reshaping the profession
